Srinagar, Aug 03 (KNO): Asserting that revival of the J&K Open Golf Championship after a gap of several years is expected to boost sport in the Union Territory, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of DP World Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI), Amandeep Johl on Monday said that the tournament would inspire youngsters to dispel the notion that the golf is only meant for the elite.
Talking to reporters on the sidelines of the DP World India Championship Lotus Trophy unveiling at the Royal Springs Golf Course, Johl, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said one of the biggest challenges facing golf in the region is the misconception that the game is inaccessible to ordinary people.
"Many people believe golf is only for the rich or senior officials, but that is not true. Golf courses are open to everyone. Anyone can pay the green fee, rent clubs and enjoy the game," he said.
Johl said the tournament is aimed not only at bringing professional golf back to Jammu and Kashmir but also at encouraging young boys and girls to take up the sport.
Expressing hope that the J&K Open would become a permanent fixture on the national calendar, Johl said regular tournaments would help identify and nurture local talent.
"Jammu and Kashmir has produced quality golfers in the past. With consistent exposure and annual tournaments, there is every possibility of producing more champions," he said.
The PGTI chief also appreciated the support extended by the Jammu and Kashmir government and Tourism Department in reviving the tournament.
"A little support goes a long way. It reflects the government's intent to promote world-class sporting events in the region, and we are happy to partner in that effort," he said.
The Rs 1 crore J&K Open, supported by J&K Tourism and the Government of Jammu and Kashmir, will be held at the Royal Springs Golf Course from August 4 to 7, featuring leading Indian professionals alongside international participants—(KNO)
